YEKATERINA KOVSHOVA

— PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER BASED IN TALLINN, ESTONIA / EUROPE

My Journey to Photography

I started taking photos in 2007 with a simple 5-megapixel camera. I took pictures for school events and reports, which made me love visual storytelling. This led me to join the Meksvideo — School of Experimental Film and Video in Tallinn.

For the next few years, I worked in different parts of the visual media industry. I spent three years in television, one year in big movies, and two years in video editing. During all this time, I kept taking photos as a hobby, but no one noticed my work.

In 2023, I decided to take informal photography classes and learn about the “philosophy of portraiture.” This helped me improve my skills and understand the emotional and conceptual depth that a portrait can show. After this project, people’s attitudes toward my photos changed, and I found my style in photography.

The study was conducted in Russian, and if you would like to read more about the project, here are some of my thoughts. (rus)

Now, I focus on creating dramatic and experimental black-and-white portraits. My journey has been long and full of different experiences, but each step has brought me closer to the art I love.
